A man-made disaster that is worse than California fires
Hearst Castle in San Simeon draws too much attention that it really should. Crowds of sweaty tourist commit pilgrimage to this forsaken place every year without doing much of research. In fact this place is one of the worst places in all of California with kids. The castle itself was not supposed to be in that location at all. It disrupts the natural habitat and just like it’s owner William Hurst (a yellow papers magnate) disrupts California’s beauty. If you still want to go there after reading this review, just check out the video from the castle and it will save you on time.
Smithsonian Channel overview of the grounds:
5 reasons not to go to the Hearst castle, San Simeon
Drive to Hurst Castle is too long (Reason #1)
First of all, just imagine that it takes equally over 4-5 hours from Los Angeles and San Francisco to drive to this place! You’ll spend half a day driving on a very tortuous road with limited interesting places along the way. Hearst Castle is literally located in the middle of nowhere. Besides presenting you with geographically unfavorable location lets go through remaining 4 reasons.
William Hurst is a Jerk (Reason #2)
William Hurst was a prime grade a-hole, a yellow paper news magnate – kind off liek the Donald Trump of his time. He liked to be revered and attempted to mingle with the stars, trying to rub off their fiery fame. However he was not a very pleasant dude to chill with. He constantly produced B.S. stories on people and there even was a saying. “She went from bad to Hurst.” so this is reason number two. He was building his dream while crushing many other people’s dreams with his yellow press posts. “Turn down Hearst’s invitation and your career was over.”
No toilets or plumbing! (Reason #3)
They still don’t have a working plumbing, and it’s 2018. As soon as you arrive to the parking lot you will see rows and rows of port-a-potties. Which is insane! They will give you an excuse, saying that the water shot off is temporary… complete B.S. Furthermore, the smell from all these outside toilets during the summer is revolting.
Hot and lots of tourist (Reason #4)
It gets insanely hot during the summer and you will be taking a long bus ride up the hills to the castle, it will be like another wait in a line and then again a ride… over an hour to get to the castle if not longer. Surprisingly, there will be tons of tourists packed into this place as usual. The crowds are extremely annoying and just make you go, “Mehhh.”
Design is a fiasco (Reason #5)
You won’t see that amazing pool from Lady Gaga’s music video.
There is usually no water in the pools at the worst Castle because of poor engineering design of the pool. There are cracks that constantly make the pool leak.
Here’s a pool inside the castle that was actually better preserved than the one outside, although riddled with many issues as well.
In fact you won’t see any phenomenal architecture at all. Absolutely distasteful and simply boring. Poured out of concrete and old trashy design elements from Europe it seems like this was an architect’s worst nightmare.
Absolute disaster, I bet this Worst Castle attraction depletes more money from California’s Department of State Parks budget than annual California fires and other natural disasters combined.
