Shark Fin Cove Beach – secret Santa Cruz destination
If you don’t know what to do in Santa Cruz with children and looking simply looking for California vacation ideas – check out Shark Fin Cove Beach in Davenport. This place makes it to the top of the Best Beaches in California, specifically Northern California.
The beach has been on our radar for quite some time. Circulating around the internet we’ve seen the shark’s fin cove pics way too many time to ignore it. Although on the photos by all the bloggers it seemed that it’s a frigid and unwelcome rugged patch of the Northern California coast.

The shores of the Shark Fin Cove are as formidable as you can picture them, but what very few people fail to capture is a welcoming golden beach in the cove right bellow the cliffs. This was probably one of the best openly secret beaches we’ve ever been to in California; and if it wasn’t for all the graffiti on the rocks it would be immaculate. Shark fin cove makes it to the top of the best beaches in California in our view.
Shark Fin Cove Parking
There are no parking designation or huge signs pointing to the beach. A short strip of dirt road off of Pacific Coast Highway is all you have to park on. It is easier to drive into it if you’re going from North to South. Furthermore the place is popular and marking is rather limited.
There are old train tracks that lay between the PCH dirt shoulder parking and the Beach. If you find them – you’ll know that you’re going in the right direction
Climbing down to Shark Tooth Beach
After you park on PCH you’re going to have to climb/hike down a very steep hill, and this might be a bit challenging, especially if you have a child. Nonetheless there are always tons of parents with kids varying in age – from toddlers to teens.
Add the beach to your Santa Cruz or PCH itinerary
Whether you are travelling around the world with children or simply taking a daycation or staycation in California. Shark Fin Cove should make it on your itinerary. Did I mention that there’s even a little cave that opens into a second private cove?
Clearly your experience will be weather depended at the Shark Fin, although with plenty of parking along PCH we wish you the best and hope you enjoy this unusual place on a sunny afternoon! We had a great time at the beach and will be coming back here again and again.
